Old-Fashioned Dishwashing Detergent

Photo of a bottle of homemade dish soap by the sink

A grated-soap and washing soda liquid for hand-washing dishes — the same basic formula home cooks relied on before bottled detergent existed.

What you'll need

Steps

  1. Dissolve the grated soap in hot water over low heat, stirring until smooth.
  2. Stir in the washing soda until fully dissolved.
  3. Cool completely and pour into a squeeze bottle by the sink.
Tip: It won't foam like store-bought dish soap — that's normal, and it still cuts grease just as well.
